Money Management
HOW YOU CAN HELPTHE VULNERABLE MAINTAIN THEIR INDEPENDENCE
THE PROBLEM: As the senior population of our community expands, a growing number of adults are at risk of abuse, neglect, exploitation and eviction. Why? Because they are incapable of managing their finances.
Age or mental illness robs them of the ability to handle simple financial responsibilities. They neglect to pay their rent and utilities. They go without food or carry large sums of money, which is sometimes lost or stolen.
Too often the end result is the loss of independence through institutionalization or guardianship.

CASE IN POINT: With the onset of creeping dementia, Mrs. L., a 79-year old retired nurse, began to forget to pay her bills, buy grocers and medicine and maintain her home. To make matters worse her health declined rapidly when her utilities were shut off.
Luckily for Mrs. L., a Money Management voluntter stepped in to help. Bills were paid, the lights and water were turned back on and proper food and medication improved her health. Mrs. L. was again able to enjoy life in her own home.
THE SOLUTION: The Money Management program, a service sponsored by the Comal County Senior Citizens Foundation in New Braunfels, offers help to those in need.
In late 2005, the CCSCF and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) partnered to develop the Money Management Program to help at-risk low-income elderly and disabled adults.
